Several parts of my model were slightly shifted from their original positions because of this. There have been several times when I've had verts selected, and accidentally or habitually tabbed through my XYZ, not realizing that it was actually slightly "average-adjusting" their positions whenever I did that. Of course I'm doing some very high precision work and this is why I noticed this behavior.

Right? How can it keep on shifting around if I keep entering "100" for the same field? It's as if my viewport's zoom level actually affects the resultant position of the verts when inputting a value!? (which would be completely strange) Today, I noticed that you can click a vert, type in a number in X (etc) and hit tab/enter, and the vert shifts very slightly in the view (as already explained), but, if you zoom in one tick, and do the same thing again (press tab again on the X field), it moves yet again! Zoom in another tick, tab on the X field, it moves yet again! What the heck is going on here? If a vert is at X = 100, then it's at X = 100. That, to me, verifies that it's truncating off that floating point error. I assume this, because I noticed that if you zoom in quite far, select a vert, put the cursor in an XYZ field (i.e., put in the X field and look in the Top view), you will see your vert move ever so slightly. So, if I have an arbitrarily moved vert at 88.237 (but it's "really" at 88.237891285), once you hit tab or enter in that field, it's now at exactly 88.2370000000). It solidifies that >THAT< number is going to be the new position when you tab (or Enter). Today I noticed that tabbing through the XYZ positions ALSO counts as pressing enter. Now the vert is exactly at that position, there is no way it can be at 100.0003. I've always worked in Max under this assumption that there is basically always a floating point error on positions of verts - UNLESS you do a manual type in for the vert position, i.e. Moving something via dragging, or shift-dragging an edge (anything with the mouse) will inevitably cause this. I'm using 3ds max 2014 圆4, and I noticed a somewhat strange behavior with setting vertex positions.įirstly, from what I understand (please correct me if I'm wrong), when you drag or shift-drag anything, verts will unavoidably move to positions that are outside of the precision of 3 zeros.
